Nyala, Darfur: IDP camp

THIS SITE IS DEDICATED TO BRINGING HOPE TO REFUGEES AROUND THE WORLD.

Nearly 12 million people live as refugees in temporary camps worldwide. 80% are women and children. The average stay is now 17 years! That's up from an average of 9 years in 1994. At least 7.8 million have been housed in camps for over ten years.

LEARN WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO REVERSE THIS TREND.

Refugees are caught in a state of limbo, they have no rights, no citizenship in the host country, in many cases are not allowed to seek employment, and are entirely dependent on others for food. In so many cases they are left with little to do, year after year; a terrible waste of human capacity to say nothing of the despair and suffering that such a lifeless existence must generate.

FROM A REFUGEE WHO MADE IT TO SAFETY –
Anwar Suliman: The police came and caught me in my home
at two o'clock in the morning.
17 Years: Were you tortured?
Anwar Suliman: They have a room, they take everybody there... and burn those people by fire.
17 Years: What happened after that?
Anwar Suliman: They took me and threw me into the desert.
17 Years: How did you survive?
Anwar Suliman: A truck driver showed up and said: "Are you a human being?... it looks like you're having a problem!"
17 Years: You didn't look so good?
Anwar Suliman: Exactly. So I said: "Yes, I am human being!"
